Happy Monday Everyone!
Today I'm discussing the Sheik Zayed mosque and have included about 100 pictures, so grab a cup of coffee and settle in! As you all know I have been playing tourist as of late and last week got to visit one of my new cities, major tourist attractions and most popular place of worship, Sheik Zeyed Mosque.
Regardless of your faith, this mosque is an absolute must do when in Abu Dhabi. A few friends who had visited Abu Dhabi before me, assured me it was breath taking and well worth a visit. And boy, was it ever!
A few fun facts about this architectural masterpiece.
- The mosque took 9 years to build and was completed in 2007
- It is the Largest mosque in the united Arab Emirates (its grounds are spread over 30 acres)
- the mosque s design includes an impressive 82 domes
- Has a capacity for 41 000 worshipers at one time
- Cost a massive $545 million to build
I visited both the male and female prayer halls and they were AMAZING. Every detail in this construction has been thought out and planned to (opulent) perfection!
Just look at those chandeliers! The mosque is home to 7 crystal chandeliers. The largest weighing close to 12 tones!
And the flooring! Just look at the mosaic detailing. This mosque seriously make my little design heart skip a beat!
